Musing Monday-Lending Books

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about lending books...

A few weeks back we had a question about borrowing books, this week I was wondering what your policy was on lending books. Do you lend books to anyone? Just friends? Only big readers? How long are they allowed to have them?

I have had many, many, many bad experiences with lending books so now I only lend to family members (mostly my mom). In my mom's case, I'll take the book back whenever she's done be it years or months later but for everyone else, I'll ask about it a couple of months later just to make sure they haven't lost it.

  1. I am pretty selective about who I lend books out to these days. Occasionally I will lend a book to someone I've not yet lent a book to, making clear my expectations. I've been disappointed in people I thought I could trust and others have proven themselves worthy of future borrowing. Mostly though, I just loan books to my parents and my in-laws.

  2. I mainly loan books out to my sister and my Mom. Like you I know that I will get them back eventually so I usually just wait until they do.

  3. I also am pretty selective now.
I have been burned too many times. I know you and all of the bloggers are really in love with books, as am I. Our collections are so important to us, like part of us. They define us as who we are. When one is missing and doesn't come back I feel I have lost something very special. A part of my life really. So...I will loan to my sister, best friend only. Am I bad or what?

  4. I've had bad experiences with lending books out too, but now if I lend them out, I know not to get sad if I dont get them back.

  6. Wendy: Me too, they all know how nuts I am about my books!

Samantha: I always kind of wished I had a sister but with my luck she wouldn't enjoy reading lol.

Wisteria: Amen to that (and no, you're not bad)! Once I love a book, it stays loved :) I so hate replacing them too.

Naida: Generally, I only lend the ones I can live without if they don't make it back.

    Sheri: Will do! Thank you!

  7. I am selective when I lend out books. Some of my books never made their way back to me. It's sad. Those that came back no longer look good. They look like road kill (I;m not exaggerating)... SIGH~~

  8. I can only lend books to those I know well... but since most of my friends don't read, so I don't get the chance to lend my books to anyone, hehe.

  9. I'm very selective about who I lend books too. I will to one of my best friends, her mom and my mom. That's it and that's only because I know they treat books in the same manner I do.

  10. Alice: I've had one or two "road-kill" experiences myself :(

Melody: Yeah, most of my friends are non-readers too.

Dar: Those are the very best kinds of people :)
