Musing Monday- Character Likes/ Dislikes

This week’s musing asks…

What makes you love / hate a character in a book?

I have to connect with a character somehow for me to love them. They also have to have something redeemable about them. It's not that hard to make me dislike a character though. If they're whiny, don't act their age, and fall into the too-stupid-to-live mentality for example. Oh and I have a huge problem with female characters that throw themselves at the male in the story too.

  1. Ah, yes, I recognize those "too stupid to live" characters. Don't like whiny ones either.

  2. I don't like the whining characters either, or the bed jumpers. I don't mind light romance, but, the in your face sex is a book that goes in the trash, I never finish reading it.

  3. I totally agree. I can't stand female characters who throw themselves at men. Talk about desperate. Here's my musing: http://parchmentgirl.com/2010/09/20/musing-mondays-no-three/

  5. I need characters with back bone. If they don't have some sort of oomph then I have to put down the book.

  6. I don't like whiny, stupid or helpless. I can like a book even if I don't like the characters, though.

  9. I always think it is so interesting how involved we can get with fictional characters.

  10. Before I hate a character, I want to understand why she behaves that way. But generally, stupid and hopeless characters make me sick.
