Shear Genius Episode 5

This week’s Shear Genius was called It Looks Like a Helmut. The short-cut challenge was interesting! The stylists got to work on some really cute surfers… the twist is that they had to cut and style their hair on the beach (after these guys just got out of the water) and they couldn’t wash their hair. Yikes! The only “after” look that I really didn’t like was on Daniel’s model. He took a cute guy and made him look so dorky! Glenn’s twin wasn’t as bad but she did make him look very different from his brother (I swear I’ve seen these guys somewhere before, does anyone know who they are?). The elimination challenge was a good one this week. Everyone had to create a new look on a wig (that totally doesn’t look like one) for their clients who have Alopecia, which is an incurable disease that can make the person bald. I loved that Paulo cried for these courageous women! He’s never been my favorite person on the show so I never paid him much attention but I thought that was so sweet. Plus I really ended up loving his hair style. I totally agree with the judges on who is in the top and the bottom this week. Love the winning look but I thought one of the other bottom pople (who I don’t like- at all) should have went home.

New Neverland Header

I spent a few hours working on this today for my new header for Ladytink's Neverland. What do you think? (I couldn't figure out how to make this bigger so I uploaded the large version at the bottom of the blog I made it for).

Another Great Show

Shear Genius works a lot like Project Runway but with hair instead of clothes. This is the other show that Living Read Girl got me into. The fourth episode was called Do It Yourself and the short-cut challenge was pretty much musical chairs but with the clients. An extremely difficult challenge but some people pulled it off, however, only a few managed to get through it okay- like Dee. Other people didn’t do so well, the worst of which was the Ronald McDonald hair color on Meredith‘s client! It was incredibly cringe- worthy but also the only bold move. Too bad, it didn’t work out- at all. Yuck!

The elimination challenge was interesting because they had to teach their clients how to recreate the look that they gave them. Then they were judged the next morning on how well their clients recreated the look. Some people played it safe and other people’s were too complex- like Meredith’s do. If you have to quiz your client before she leaves then you are certainly overwhelming her. None of the end results was actually really bad but I agree with the judges on who they sent home since it just looked unfinished. One of the other people who was on bottom is barely squeaking by so I doubt that they will last much longer either.
A note about the competitors: I think Nekisa is excessively whiny and complains way too much plus she thinks WAY too highly of herself. Meredith never did anything that made her stand out in a good way either but I do like the Texas boy Daniel’s personality and although I didn’t like him at first, Charlie has really grown on me too. Mainly because he’s very talented. I could do without some of his attitude but more times than not I agree with his opinions.

My First Project Runway

I’m probably the last person in the world to start watching this show but Lady T at Living Read Girl finally pushed me into seeing Project Runway (and Shear Genius) for the first time. I was surprised at how much I loved it! The contestants were a diverse bunch but most of them took the safe route in the first challenge (designing something from grocery store items- most people chose to use tablecloths).

My favorites were the candy one by Leanne and the cup one by Daniel but I also liked a few of the more simple ones. The worst ones were really bad. Jerry's looked like something Dexter would find fashionable and garbage-bag girl Stella could have done so much more even if the bags weren't what she wanted. As it was, she deserved to be on the bottom but the right person left but I won’t spoil it for you. Watch it yourself!

Tom Lehrer

Sorry for all of the videos lately but I just had to post this. I LOVE this man!

Probably his most popular and tamest work is about the periodic table (he's a Harvard graduate teacher- his satires were just a short-lived hobby)

Sesame Street is Bad for Kids?

I don't know how long this has been out but I just stumbled across it. Personally I think it's the shows today that are bad for kids and I wish whoever was in charge of this type of thing would bring back the stuff I had as a kid :(

What an Animal Reading Challenge

Passion for the Page owner Kristi is hosting her first reading challenge! Since it’s books about animals and since I just finished reading The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith, I’m joining up!

The rules are simple:
1. Read at least 6 books that have any of these requirements:
a. an animal in the title of the book
b. an animal on the cover of the book
c. an animal that plays a major role in the book
d. a main character that is or turns into an animal (define that however you'd like ;>)).

2. The animal can be any type of animal (real or fictitious)--dog, cat, monkey, wolf, snake, insect, hedgehog, aardvark...dragons, mermaids, centaurs, fairies, vampires...you get the idea...

3. Challenge runs from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009. You can still sign up after July 1st as long as you can get 6 books read by June 30th ;>).
4. Books can be fiction or nonfiction.
5. You may make a list of books at the beginning of the challenge or just list them as you find them.
6. Books may be swapped out at anytime (assuming you made a list to begin with).
7. Crossover books with other challenges is permitted and encouraged.
8. You don't have to blog or write a review, but you can if you want to.

Now I just need to decide what other books I’m going to read for the challenge.
