Libraries are Popular Again!

cat
I read something this morning that warmed my heart and I have to share: "Libraries are experiencing a renewal in popularity."

"We certainly have seen nationwide, particularly in these tougher times, libraries become even more popular. Everybody is seeing large percentage increases in their use of books and obviously the computers as well," Longino said.

They're building a brand new library, and it's going to be a big one too, in Biloxi, Mississippi! Katrina killed the old one even though I had never been to it (a little too far out of my library branch) but they're planning to make the new one a central part of the community... as it should be!

  1. I never knew libraries were unpopular?! My local library is always busy and hopping...full of kids, adults, teens. Its the place to be everyday of the week.

  2. That's awesome! We are supposedly getting a new library, too, but for different reasoning... I am going by info from my guy, though, and he does not read... so he might be wrong!

  3. The branch by my house is always busy and it's just a small one. I wish it was bigger. We have several in my city and I'm sure they've always been busier but maybe more so now that people are watching their pennies more.

  7. That is wonderful news, Jen. One of the libraries in town recently went through major renovations, including a growth spurt. It will be interesting to see how it turns out once it's all done.

  8. I once read somewhere (in a history class maybe) that churches were the backbone of a community. I think in the ideal society the library would be the central point of community.

  9. Serena: Library funding is often cut around here because either people don't read or they prefer to own their own books. Sounds like you have an amazing library!

Kailana: Hope you do get one! Old libraries are nice but sometimes new can be better when it comes to something the public uses :)

Dar: Yeah, I've noticed that unless I'm quick I have to wait a month or more for popular new releases now. Not sure if this is a good thing for authors and publishers though.

Naida: It's a bit out of my way but I do plan on going to check it out!

Nymeth: Looking forward to it (not as much as I am of the Target finally opening down here though)!

    Melody: Yep!!!

    J. Kaye: Thanks for making me feel loved with zombie chickens! (well, there's a sentence I never thought I'd type...)

Wendy: The one I go to the most often really could use a bit of an update. At least they painted recently lol.

    Alice Teh: :o)

Joanne: Oh I definitely agree! Libraries are one of my most favorite places in the world :)
