Musing Monday- Reading

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about the reading……

When reading do you read every word? Do you ever skip chapters or skim over parts? (question curtesy of Wendy)

Oh I used to have such a hard time keeping myself from skipping ahead while reading and it would take me so much time to go back and try to figure out what I hadn't read. Finally I found a solution- bookmarks!

I just use a bookmark and go down line by line and it keeps me on track and my eyes can't stray down to see what happens next in a really suspenseful moment. It really helps and I finish the books so much faster too since I'm not re-reading sections constantly.

  1. I used to skip ahead to see if I figured out what was going to happen, but not any more.

  2. The only time I skim is if I'm getting bored or if the description just becomes too much. I've never skipped whole chapters though.

  6. I do that sometimes too! I'll use a bookmark or piece of paper when I can't concentrate or the book is getting exciting and I start reading faster and find myself skipping.

    My answer is up now.

  7. I used to have the bad habit of looking at the very last page. It took a really long time and lot of self control to quit doing it.

  9. That's a great idea! Like Beth, I don't have trouble with skipping ahead, but I do skim if certain scenarios or chapters bored me.

  10. Nise': Yeah I learned early that skipping ahead made me take more time with the book lol

Yvonne: I have but only just to see if a character is still alive and then I go right back.

Zetor: Lol, not really but I'm willing to use just about anything that works well!

Beth F: Thanks! Skimming was another huge problem of mine too lol

Jenny Girl & Naida: Thank you!

Erika Lynn: Sometimes I'd like to be able to break the habit (especially when its hurting my wrists) but it does come in handy.

Robin of My Two Blessings: It really does help, doesn't it?

Samantha: I remember doing that when I first started reading chapter books. I'm still tempted now and again though!

Dar & Melody: I hope you find it helpful!

  11. Haha! Sometimes my eyes will wonder to the next page too and I'll read something I shouldn't. That doesn't happen too often though.

I do admit to skimming a paragraph now and then if it's overly descriptive and doesn't really add to the progress of the story. I don't do it often and I've never skipped an entire chapter or to the back of the book just to see what happens.

  12. Generally, I read every single word, especially for fiction. For non-fiction, I adopt a different approach with scanning first then dig into the chapters that are most relevant to me. I usually read everything from cover to cover. :)
