BTT- Changing Reading Tastes

Have your reading choices changed over the years? Or pretty much stayed the same? (And yes, from childhood to adulthood we usually read different things, but some people stick to basically the same kind of book their entire lives, so…)

Yes and no. I've always adored fantasy and fairy tales and that's still true but the older I've gotten the more varied my tastes have gotten. I was in my late teens before I voluntarily picked up a nonfiction book for example and while they aren't my absolute favorite, I do like to read them occasionally. However, I still prefer fantasy of almost any kind to anything else.

  1. There are certain genres I've always enjoyed and I tend to go through phases with others.

  2. When I was younger my mom restricted me alot with what I wanted to read. If it wasn't a happy book, I wasn't allowed to read it. So I guess even back then I gravitated towards the thrillers or scarier books.

I read historical romances in my teens and it's so weird because I never read one as an adult. I read a ton of mysteries and thrillers. Then I read some chick lit. Finally a couple yrs ago I got on the paranormal/urban fantasy and YA band wagon and that is a majority of what I read now. So I guess my tastes have changed quite a bit. :)

  3. Bermudaonion: Me too.

Rachael: My mom wasn't a reader until I right before I moved away from home so she didn't really care what I read. I wish I would have found the books I like now back then though. I read a lot of classics growing up because they're the only ones I had heard of.

  4. Except for paranormal stuff (which I can't get into even after trying few times), I have always read pretty much everything. My reading depends a lot on my book but it is always evolving...

Here is my BTT: Evolution post!

  5. I used to read a lot more horror novels when I was younger, which has shifted into paranormal/urban fantasy territory and now expanding over to fantasy saga country.

Part of that latest switch is due to being hooked on the show Legend of the Seeker(which has sadly been canceled after only two seasons)and starting to read the Terry Goodkind books that are the basis for the series, not to mention Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel titles as well.

I think it's good to spread your literary wings there, keeps things interesting.

  7. I tend to enjoy the same type books I did when I was younger, but I do think I read outside of those limits more now than I did then.

  8. Like you, I've always been a fantasy and fairy tale reader. Back in the old days though there weren't that many choices as we have now. So I tend to grasp whatever I could lay my hands on before. That tends to spill into other genres. Better than nothing to read at all! Lol! Now I'm picky as to which fantasy book to read. Luxury!!
