Real quick post. As you may have noticed over on my other blog I recently reviewed Disney's The Story of Robin Hood. Since it was not based on any particular book, I was hoping one of my readers had a recommendation of a really good novel based on the Robin Hood legend. Please?
While we're talking about recommendations (did I already do this? I hope not!), could you please suggest a good Alice in Wonderland (or Through the Looking Glass) movie? I've seen the Disney version a billion times and would love to see your favorite!

Tink, a version of Alice in WOnderland I enjoyed as a child was a TV-miniseries from 1985 that aired on CBS. It featured a star-studded cast and is perfect for all ages. I'm pleasantly surprised to say it's available on DVD. Here is a link to it on Amazon:

Another notable version from 1999 aired on NBC in America, and I believe it may have been released as a theatrical film in Europe. Kate Beckinsale plays Alice with another star-studded cast in a version that is more faithful to the original book, and therefore has a slightly edgier feel to it than other adaptations. This is also available on Amazon:

I hope this helps!
Hi LadyTink!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Robin Hood movie outside of Disney's is Robin and Marian starring Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. It takes up as an older Robin and Marian come together, as well as Disney's animated Robin Hood. There's also Kevin Costner's rendition in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and there's Errol Flynn as Robin in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938).
My picks for Alice have already been mentioned by Phillyradiogeek. Both were fun.
I would have to say the Kevin Costner version of Robin Hood too. It is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteNottingham!! Oh, how I miss it. I have about 10 pictures of myself with that statue, lol.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could recommend a good Robin Hood novel, but I've yet to find one myself! I have Robin Hood by Antonia Fraser, which is YA, in my tbr pile. And there's one by Robin Mckinley as welll...The Outlaws of Sherwood.
As for Alice in Wonderland movies, I only know the Disney version too...but I'm anxiously awaiting Tim Burton's adaptation!
For a novel based on the Robin Hood idea, you could try Jennifer Roberson's duology:
ReplyDeleteRobin Hood/Marian
LADY OF THE FOREST
LADY OF SHERWOOD
It's from the female perspective and I am not so sure about the rereleased covers...
I have a trilogy here that I have not read yet.. not sure, but it might be "more modern" . it's supposed to be based on Robin Hood. The books are "Hood/ Scarlet/ Tuck".. you might look them up on amazon and see if they might be something you'd like. I can't even recommend them 'cause I haven't read them yet!
ReplyDeleteoh and I love Kevin Costner's Robin Hood Movie.. but mostly because I love, love, love Alan Rickman as the Sherif of Nottingham!
I haven't read any Robin Hood based novels, but my favorite film version is The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn(I even own the special edition DVD that has a "Saturday Matinee" feature which gives you a short film and a cartoon before the movie starts).
