The Future in Fiction

I just reviewed the first book in J.D. Robb's In Death series and since it is set in the future, I started thinking about all the things that the future is supposed to bring in fiction. My favorite thing is probably that Autochef in the book or the fact that tabacco is illegal but that's just from Naked in Death. I haven't read too many futuristic novels but there is usually somthing I think is particularly neat in each one (the hoverboards in Uglies for instance).

Do you have a favorite invention or something that you found really interesting that was in a futuristic novel? What book (or series) was it in?

  1. I can't think of anything. :-( I actually remembered one invention and asked my husband if he could remember what book it came from, and he said it was from one of his own stories. I told him it's a high compliment that the one thing I could think of was something he'd "invented". :-) I'm afraid I can't share what that is though since his story isn't published and he might someday like to try to make that happen.

  4. I hate it when someone asks a really good question and I can't think of an answer!

What about the Heart of Gold from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? That was pretty cool.

  5. Rebecca: I've been meaning to get around to reading that book (and seeing the film adaptation) but I haven't managed it yet. :(
